The Line-Up
2019 Paitin Arneis "Vigna Elisa", Langhe, Piedmont, Italy 17.99
“La vigna d’Elisa”, was the appellation used by our family to name the grapes conducted by Elisa Elia, coming from the only vineyard in Roero we possess in Varinere of Priocca. Vinified by Secondo, his son, only after she passed away in 1973. The vineyard were so called di “Elisa” and as such the wine produced from these grapes still carry the name of this great women that managed the winery during the dark ages of the Second World War.
The wine has a richness of body and texture like no other from this variety. Notes of bitter orange, with a salty, mineral tang, building up on the palate with floral notes of honeysuckle. We would describe this an an aromatic white, but there's more to it than that. Quite simply the best Arneis we have yet tried.
2018 Paitin Barbera d'Alba "Serra", Piedmont, Italy $18.99
Serra is the name our family since long time has assigned to the fresher and more delicate slope of the Serraboella. Historically voted for great Barbera. More evolved soils, richer, less dry, in a more closed and fresh valley, gives origin to rigorous wine, full but never opulent and balanced in their freshness. From some years now, in the Serra we do not have only Neive grapes but also a small portion comes from the Rivoli region of Alba.
This is rich and dense, with blackberry, black cherry and violet flavors riding the wave of vivid acidity. Stays focused and concentrated through the long finish.
2016 Paitin Barbera d'Alba Superiore "Campolive", Piedmont, Italy $29.99
Campolive is a very steep plot on the border between Serraboella and Bricco di Neive, under the road od the Montà del Bricco. Already named as such from the monks who in the past owned this site: the field of the olive (“campo dell’oliva”). Probably centuries ago dedicated to the olive trees, since its protected and warm position.
Dark garnet in color. Aromas of dry red fruits, earth, red licorice, and spice. Flavors of red and black fruits, light smokey tobacco, black pepper, brown sugar, and a touch of oak. Deliciously smooth, a round mouthful, and nicely integrated tannins. Fine wine that pairs well with aged cheeses, spicy red meat.
2018 Paitin Barbaresco "Serraboella", Piedmont, Italy $42.99
This wine draws its fruit from across the Serraboella vineyard in Neive with vines of various ages. The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella has a broad reach, thanks to its balanced aromas of wild berry, dried cherry, crushed roses and violets. The wine spreads cleanly over the palate, thanks to the extra volume offered by its earthy and delicately mineral flavors. Like other releases from Paitin, the standout feature here is the silky nature of the mouthfeel.
2018 Paitin Barbaresco "Sori Paitin", Piedmont, Italy $54.99
"The family that owns the Paitin estate lost its patriarch, Secondo Pasquero Elia, as this wine was being readied for release, and he would have been proud of the way this turned out. The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin is glossy and polished with a super fine and delicate quality of fruit. It just glides over the palate as if it were on skates. That beautiful forward momentum is driven by light cassis, dried cherry, iron skillet, candied orange peel and crushed flowers. The finish is exceptionally smooth and elegant. Complimenti." 95pts Wine Spectator
