NV Seyssel "Petit Royal" Brut, France $22.99
The village of Seyssel, in the French Alps, has a history of viticulture dating back centuries, having built a reputation for floral-scented charmers from the local grapes, Molette and Altesse. Produced in the méthode traditionnelle and aged for two years sur latte, the Petit Royal is unequaled in the world of sparkling wine: alpine flowers, dried fruit, wildflower honey, and a toasty, yeasty note give this value sparkler an utterly delightful aromatic richness and complexity.
2020 Guy Breton "Cuvee Marylou" Beaujolais Villages, Beaujolais, France $28.99
Domaine Guy Breton was founded in 1935 and has consistently produced 90+ point wines from Morgon with organic farming and an annual production of just 3000 cases. Guy Breton is one of the benchmark producers in the region, who, along with Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Jean Foillard, was dubbed the Gang of Four by Kermit Lynch, honoring them for blazing the trail with high-quality, natural wines during a time when Beaujolais' reputation was flagging. According to Kermit Lynch: "Guy’s Beaujolais Villages “Marylou” is sourced from the St-Joseph and Grand Cras subzones of the appellation, about 500 meters from his Morgon vines. The wine is named after Marylou, Guy Breton’s daughter."
2020 Guy Breton Feurie, Beaujolais, France $48.99
Widely known as “The Queen of Beaujolais” the Cru of Fleurie is set on the steep slopes at the foot of La Madone. 90% of the soil here is pink granitic, which is dry & acidic and creates these wonderfully lifted wines that are elegantly floral and still ripe and juicy. Breton has done it again.
2019 Domaine Chignard "Beauvernay" Julienas, Beaujolais, France $26.99
Cédric Chignard’s chewy Juliénas is the darkest wine in this group, with the firm spine that comes from old vines in hard, rocky terrain. When you’re in the shop, look for the black gothic label. It matches the wine. —Anthony Lynch
2020 Domaine Chignard "Les Moriers" Fleurie, Beaujolais, France $30.99
Given the similarity in sound, it might seem cliché or contrived to describe reds from Fleurie as among the most floral of Beaujolais, but they truly are! This is one of Fleurie’s signatures, a main way its wines stand out from those of Beaujolais’s nine other crus. Cédric Chignard’s Les Moriers cuvée is not just irresistibly floral, though. Despite being light on its feet, it bears a soupçon of savory smoke as well as a spine of minerality and staying power more commonly associated with Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie’s neighbor.
2020 Domaine Gachot-Monot Cote De Nuits Villages, Burgundy, France $42.99
First, it is impeccable. Second, it does not exceed its appellation; it is not a substitute Romanée Conti; it is a perfect Côte de Nuits-Villages. The pretty nose smells fabulously of Pinot Noir. The palate has good, juicy flesh to it, and the tannin/acid balance . . . well, even in Burgundy you rarely find such an elegant balance.
As red Burgundy or Pinot Noir, I think you will agree that this is an incredible value.
2020 Domaine de La Chanteleuserie "CUVÉE ALOUETTES” Bourgueil (Cab Franc), Loire Valley, France $25.99
This bottling, though, is the ultimate bistro or picnic Bourgueil, a red that radiates joy and versatility while offering enough spine to stand up to heartier dishes. The Boucard family, who has been making wine here since 1822, ages Alouettes for eight to twelve months in stainless-steel tanks to preserve as much of the fruit’s bright, fresh character as possible. Evoking blackberries, black cherries, and graphite, this is a wine you’ll want to have on hand all summer.—Tom Wolf
