2019 Chateau Haut Pasquet Rouge, Bordeaux, France $17.99
We’re not sure why this very classic red Bordeaux isn’t a lot more expensive. Unlike most “value” Bordeaux, it’s based the region’s best, most aristocratic grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. The one-third Merlot adds volume and plumpness and the time part of the wine spends in new French oak barrels – a rarity in value Bordeaux – gives polish, spice, and added complexity.
The aromas here scream "Bordeaux" with dark black currant, cedar and tobacco notes and chocolate covered cherries all intermingling nicely. The aromas suggest a rich, luscious, wine and that’s just what you’ll find when you taste it, too. Flavors of ripe raspberry and sweet currant make up the wine’s core with generous accents of tobacco, cedar and dark chocolate for complexity. The tannins are nicely firm and lightly grippy, giving the wine shape and the ability to stand up to rich food. But they melt away gently, giving this a silky feel and nicely long finish of red fruit, tobacco, bitter chocolate and spice.
2016 Chateau Blaignan Grand Vin De Bordeaux Cru Bourgeois Rouge, Bordeaux, France $21.99
Ch. Blaignan is a tiny, impressive winery from the legendary wine growing appellation of Medoc. This glorious appellation is in many Bordeaux fan’s opinion, the pinnacle growing region on the Left Bank of Bordeaux for finesse, complexity and affordability in great wines.
The PERFECT foodie wine the 2016 Ch Blaignan Medoc is simply gorgeous! Dark, sumptuous and ample on the palate, it possesses remarkable depth.
2016 Chateau Prieure de Blaignan Rouge, Medoc, Bordeaux $21.99
This incredibly delicious Portughese dry red is made of 100% estuaate grapes : Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional and some old field-blend red varieties from two sustainably farmed sites (Serra Douro & Serra de Cotas) totaling eleven and one-half hectares and including the classic Douro blend of varieties in old parcels. Vinified with partly destemmed fruit then fermented with native yeasts in lagar; the wine is aged eight months in tank and twenty-eight months in 300-liter French oak barrels (little to no new oak). It was almost Bordeaux-like in its flavor and style, yet will please the Cabernet lover as well. Black cherry, dark plum and Asian spices abound... pair with gamey roast pork or lamb, eggplant and herb roasted vegetables in particular. A winter stew or chili will also be fantastic with this beauty.
2020 Chateau Mongravey Rouge, Margeaux, Bordeaux $53.99
Intense deep purple robe. Seductive and intense nose of cassis, raspberries, spices, vanilla and unctuous grilled and toasty aromas. Well-structured wine that is at the same time rich and lush in the mouth with smooth tannins and a very long finish.
Critical Acclaim
WE93Wine Enthusiast - The wine has all the style and elegance of a fine Margaux. The black currant fruits, while still young, exhibit a structured, spacious character, ripe with a fine balance. Touches of wood aging are just right, giving the wine a polished character. Drink from 2027.
Cellar Selection
JS91James Suckling- Ripe and pretty nose of blackcurrants, blackberries, chocolate, graphite and hazelnuts. It’s juicy with a medium to full body and firm, sleek tannins. Dark chocolate notes to close.
