DOMAINE SOUTH WINE DINNER APRIL 11TH

A Magical Evening With Winemaker Mary Taylor!

Having worked with European wine for over two decades, I’ve come to love the nuance and diversity of Europe’s extraordinary wine regions, from the tiny villages of France and Italy, to the countryside vineyards of Portugal and Spain. As a result, I also love the European system of “place name” or “appellation,” which designates the geographical origin not just of wine, but cheese, olives, and butter as well.

2020 Mary Taylor Pascal Biotteau Anjou Blanc, Loire Valley, France
“The 2020 Anjou Blanc from Pascal Biotteau is a lovely young example of chenin blanc. The bouquet is bright and nicely high-toned in personality out of the blocks, wafting from the glass in a mix of apple, sweet quince, chalky soil tones, a touch of bee pollen and a topnote of white lilies. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with excellent transparency and cut, zesty acids and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is excellent Anjou Blanc! 2021-2035. 92” – John Gilman, View From The Cellar

2020 Mary Taylor Clara Sala Sicilia Bianco, Sicily, Italy
Two sisters, Clara and Annamaria Sala, own this organic farm in Mazara del Vallo (a city well known for its fishing, and famous for its shrimp. Everything from the vines to the winemaking is certified organic and done by hand – including the harvest. The grapes here are normally picked the second to third week of August, immediately brought to the winery (literally a few yards away) and gently pressed. The grapes’ skins macerate with the juice for 4 hours. The Grillo is fermented in stainless steel tanks, where it ages on the lees for 2-3 months more before bottling. It then matures in bottle for a further 3 months before release.
We love the rich saline / citrus Mediterranean brightness of this wine – infinitely drinkable.

2019 Mary Taylor Sophie Siadou Valençay, Loire Valley France
Valençay is located due south of Cheverny and extends to seventy-four hectares of vines for the entire appellation. Madame Siadou’s 2019 is composed from a cépages of thirty-five percent each of Gamay and Côt, as well as thirty percent Pinot Noir. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in older casks for eighteen months prior to bottling. The 2019 Valençay is nicely ripe at 13.5 percent alcohol and offers up a bright, youthful nose of bitter cherry, pomegranate, a complex base of soil tones, hints of bonfire and a dollop of fresh herb tones in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and nicely transparent in personality, with a good core, ripe tannins and a long, complex and well balanced finish. I like the spine of structure that the malbec adds here, which makes it a touch chewy out of the blocks, but augurs very well for its evolution in the cellar.

2017 Mary Taylor Christophe Avi Buzet, France
I met Christophe’s wines first. I had tasted a number of bottles that day that I wasn’t thrilled with, but when I opened his Buzet, the light went on. Super graceful. Haunting, tertiary rich red berry, coffee bean, tobacco leaf. But not oaked. No primary ready-made effects. I brought the wine to a friend’s blind Bordeaux night where we taste classified growths and grand cru classe wines. Everyone loved my ‘mystery wine.’ I was thrilled to reveal that I was pouring a Merlot / Cabernet from a farm in the Southwest – 1 hour away from Bordeaux.

2019 Mary Taylor Pedro Gonzalez Mittelbrunn Castilla y León, Spain
Well balanced vintage. Beautiful red color. Ripe and fresh red fruit aromas. Fresh and powerful palate with a lingering finish. Easy to drink now.
After years of creating Leon´s benchmark, winemaker Pedro Mittelbrunn threw caution to the wind to follow his dream to help revive Leon´s local grapes, Prieto Picudo and Albarin, gaining him the name of Pedro Prieto Picudo.
He convinced the region´s best farmers to partner with him in the winery in addition to buying up specific plots to re plant with Albarin, the region´s white varietal and Prieto Picudo, the region´s big flavoured superstar red varietal. This relatively new project is most definitely up and coming and offers the world of wine something quite different.
