We present the wines of small vineyards in this competitive worldwide market, in order to defend an endangered species — winemakers who work like artisans, crafting a different wine each year. They do not impose a preconceived taste on their wines, but look to be surprised by what nature gives them — natural wines.
2021 Zeit Gruner Veltliner, Niederosterreich, Austria $21.99
It’s Wine O’Clock! "Zeit means “time” in German and the wines are truly an exploration of that. Karl Fritsch has been farming biodynamically on his family’s property since 2006; showing commitment to ecological stewardship and the artform of his wine." — Kristin Olszewski
Personality: pleasant and versatile! Fruit, flowers, and varietal peppery undertones, lip-smacking acidity: this is the kind of white wine you can enjoy on its own or with a wide array of dishes…
2020 Estezargues Les Grandes Vignes Cotes Du Rhone Blanc, Rhone Valley, France $18.99
Scents of pear and mellowing yellow apple dominates the nose and is followed by a note of hay and white flowers. The palate is clean and supple with intense flavors of stone fruit and some tropical fruit flavors as well. The wine finishes with notes of dried apricot, white flowers, and wet stones.
White from one of the first organic co-operatives in France. A blend of 70% Grenache Blanc, 10% Clairette, 10% Bourboulenc, and 10% Viognier all hand harvested. No additives or commercial yeasts are used in the winemaking aside from a light amount of sulfites. Bottled without filtering or fining.
NV Domaine Rimbert Cousin Oscar, France $21.99
‘Cousin Oscar’ is made primarily of organic estate-grown cinsault, with an additional amount of pinot noir (purchased sustainably grown fruit.) Grapes are destemmed, crushed, and gently macerated for only 3 days to keep extraction fairly low.
Extremely quaffable, chillable, and easy-going, this juicy red delivers irresistible layers of spice and berry fruit, perfect for sipping by the grill or fire pit. Great with grilled chicken kebabs or quinoa salad with kale and mushrooms.
2019 Estezargues Les Grandes Vignes Rouge, Rhone Valley, France $18.99
An elegant Rhone red made completely of the alluring Cinsault grape. A great combination of spice, fruit and a bit of rustic smoke. Made by one of the first organic co-operatives in France. Vinified without additives save a small amount of sulfur, no filtering or fining, native yeasts.
2020 Bodegas Lacus "Inedito" Rioja, Spain $21.99
"Light, bright and fruity. Some red berries and then some hints of Cherry and blackcurrant. A very nice soft palate, all fruit with a little earth on the finish."
Lacus is situated in Aldeanueva de Ebro in the Rioja Baja and is owned by Luis Arnedo. He owns 15 hectares across 7 parcels including a number of old vine parcels, planted by his grandfather. Luis works closely with his consultant and fellow winemaker, Frenchman Olivier Rivère, to produce some of the most exciting and innovative wines from Rioja Baja. Total production is just 20,000 bottles across the four wines of his Inedito (unpublished) range.
2020 Christina Zweigelt, Carnuntum, Austria $21.99
Jenny was looking for a tasty and lively natural wine from typical Austrian varieties and Christina and her Carnuntum soils offer exactly that! We said yes and never looked back, as Christina wines quickly became one of the most popular bottles in our book thanks to their indisputable drinkability and eye-catching labels, which joyfully celebrate the beneficial critters living in the vineyards.
Wine Notes: Light red with purple glints, juice cherry aromas in the nose, red berries, soft and silky tannins, and fresh finish.
