NV Mylonas Pet-Nat, Greece $30.99
Mylonas is a small 3rd generation family winery just south of Athens. While 3 generations is relatively young in this part of the world, they are still doing their part to nourish the rich history of this region’s prized grape variety for over 3,000 years -- Savatiano. Their philosophy centers around minimal intervention from vine to bottle; this is of course environmentally friendly and socially responsible choice, but it’s also the best way to consistently make fine wine.
Though this Greek sparkling wine is made in an ancient way using an ancient grape, but the results are clean, modern, and delicious.
Grapes: Savatiano 100%
Region: Attica, Greece
Good To Know: Traditional Greek viticulture, 60 year old bush trained vines, dry farmed, fermentation ends in bottle with 3 months lees aging, hand-disgorged
2023 Kir-Yianni Akakies Sparkling Rose, Greece $27.99
Bright rich pink color with persistent bubbles. The nose is intensely fruit-forward with aromas of wild strawberry, white-fleshed cherry, and tomato. The mouth is rich and fruity with vibrant acidity and a delicate touch of sweetness. Delicious, refreshing finish.
2022 Douloufakis Promara Amphora, Cyprus, Greece $42.99
Citrus and herbaceous aromas. Its flavor reminds of orange jam and bergamot. Color varies from yellow to slightly orange. Full and tannic body. It has not been filtered, therefore has a noticeably turbidity and a possible thin layer of sediment.
2022 Skouras Assyrtiko, Greece $24.99
There's the faintest whiff of white flowers on the otherwise citrus-driven nose of this racy Assyrtiko from Domaine Skouras, a 1986 winery in an almost comically picturesque corner of Greece's Peloponnese. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for four months on its lees, the wine has pleasantly balanced lemon and grapefruit flavors plus a touch of viscosity on the medium-bodied palate. Drink now with light, bright foods and snacks, or serve as an aperitif and regret absolutely nothing. — Emily Saladino
2021 Skouras Saint George, Nemea, Greece $22.99
Varietal: 100% Agiorgitiko
Taste: Agiorgitiko, a.k.a. Saint George, is a versatile grape that grows well in many of Greece’s climates, but it truly excels in Nemea’s high-altitude vineyards. Ripe fruits with lasting tannins transport you to the Eastern Mediterranean, with deep morello cherry fruits, violets, ripe raspberries and strawberries, and aniseed spices like clove and cinnamon. Mixed berries, light leather, a hint of vanilla, sweet cigar, and pepper show the rustic side of the grape. The ripe tannins provide a framework for a long finish—a textbook example of the grape’s qualities.
“Clove, thyme and dried fennel aromas complement fruity black-cherry notes on the nose of this Agiorgitiko from Skouras, a 1986 winery in the Nemea region of Greece's Peloponnese. The light-bodied palate has ripe red and black fruits plus faint cinnamon flavors, indicative of the winemaking process: This wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in old French barriques for a year. It then sits six more months in the bottle before release. The results are easy drinking and enjoyable, with balanced fruit and acid followed by velvety tannins on the long finish.” — Emily Saladino
Pairing: My mouth is watering just thinking about pairing Agiorgitiko with Kreatopita – Greek meat pies wrapped in buttered phyllo dough that gets crispy when baked. Ground beef, pork, and a bechamel sauce spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg make up the filling of kreatopita. Yum! The spice notes in the kreatopita and the wine will complement each other perfectly. Agiorgitiko is also a wonderful match for spanakopita, chicken biryani, tandoori chicken, Mediterranean-style wine-braised lamb shanks, or other dishes with earthy flavors and warm spices.
2023 Makarounas `en Arhi` Cabernet Franc, Cyprus, Greece $25.99
Makarounas Winery is a family winery located on the village of Letymbou, Cyprus. Letymbou is in the area of “Paphos vine-villages”, as they are called by the locals, exactly because the region is associated with a long tradition in vine growing. Theodoros Makarounas started the winery in 2016, after completing his studies in Oenology and Viticulture at UC Davis. He strongly embraced the belief that good wine is made in the vineyard; thus, particular attention is paid to the notion of terroir. Makarounas Winery has the privilege of being the only winery in Cyprus that produces wine solely from their privately-owned vineyards. The family has a long tradition of farming and viticulture, they provide fruit to a considerable number of wineries in Cyprus. The fact that the quality of the fruit is completely under the control of the family, allows for the production of terroir driven wines of high distinctiveness and personality. The winery produces wines mainly from the indigenous grape varieties of Cyprus and organic viticulture.
100% Cabernet Franc from un-grafted vines
From 35-year-old bush vines
Fermentation in tank after 14-day maceration
Aromas of fruit leather, red cherries, & blackberries. The use of stainless steel allows the crystal gypsum, clay, and limestone soils shine while staying true to the grape and the Island’s East Asian location.
