2022 Avinyo Petillant, Penedes, Spain $21.99
Avinyó Petillant is a vi d’agulla, the Catalan term for a prickly wine bottled with a little natural effervescence retained from the winemaking process. This vibrant and refreshing wine is the traditional summertime quaffer of the Penedès region of Catalonia, and it’s perfect for drinking out of a porrón. Petillant is made with a blend of two organically-farmed, estate vineyards. Finca La Guardia is the highest, most rugged vineyard on the property at 350 meters; here muscat de Frontignan was planted in 2003 in the stony calcareous-clay soils. Macabeo and xarel-lo are grown in the Finca Can Fontanals vineyard, planted from 1978 to 1988.
2022 Do Ferreiro Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain $32.99
Highly regarded for crafting albariño, the winery has become a reference point for the grape. They farm over 175 tiny plots of albariño by hand, located in the Salnès subzone of Rías Baixas. This valley’s proximity to the ocean, ideal climate due to the natural protection by mountain ranges, and decomposed granitic soil have gained the reputation for being the ideal zone in Rías Baixas for growing profound albariño. The blend of these plots is what makes up Do Ferreiro Albariño.
Gerardo Méndez was part of the original group of 14 growers who elevated the region’s potential, as he and his father Francisco were integral in forming the original denomination of origin Rías Baixas in 1988. Gerardo has become known for his outsized contribution to the region as a leader in quality winemaking and for his incredible generosity and amazing hospitality.
2021 Ca`n Verdura Supernova Blanc, Mallorca, Spain $29.99
This bright, refreshing white wine opens with aromas of ripe, white fruits and a touch of citrus, finishing with laser acidity and soft, salty flavors.
It’s fair to say that the new generation of wine producers on the Balearic’s largest island, Mallorca, is making an impact. Enter Tomeu Llabrés, working in self-described viticultura en miniatura, and his visionary work with the indigenous Montenegro grape at Ca’n Verdura Viticultores. In 2012 he founded his micro-winery in a former auto garage at the center of the ancient village of Binissalem, located in the north-central portion of Mallorca.
2021 Ca`n Verdura Supernova Rosat, Mallorca, Spain $25.99
This fragrant, Mediterranean rosé is medium-bodied, with notes of wild red berries, citrus, fresh herbs, and exotic spices. Production is necessarily very limited, as every bottle from this garage winery is sold each vintage.
100% Mantonegro, Directly-pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks
Supernova Rosat is a limited production rosé wine produced from the red mantonegro grape, indigenous to the Binissalem region of Mallorca, grown in call vermell soils consisting of red, iron-rich clays and limestone with small- and medium-sized galets. Supernova Rosat originates from one plot of 25 year-old, bush-trained mantonegro vines.
2021 Ca`n Verdura Supernova Negre, Mallorca, Spain $29.99
Supernova Negre is Ca’n Verdura’s flagship red wine produced from the red mantonegro grape, indigenous to the Binissalem region of Mallorca, grown in cal vermell soils consisting of red, iron-rich clays and limestone with small and medium-sized galets. Supernova red originates from the best plots of old-vine mantonegro from goblet-trained vineyards planted in the 1950s in the surrounding villages of Binissalem, including the village of Santa Maria del Camí, which are considered the finest vineyards in the area due to its situation and type of cal vermell soils.
2015 Remelluri Reserva Rioja, Spain $53.99
The iconic Remelluri estate lies in the Rioja Alavesa. Their reserva is the original wine from Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri. Siblings Telmo and Amaia Rodriguez took the reins of the project from their father in 2009 and with the assistance of Pablo Eguzkiza, they've implemented changes to the vineyards to convert towards organic farming (certified since 2014). 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, and 5% Graciano, this sees spontaneous fermentation in both stainless steel and old foudre with aging in barrels for 21 months before resting in bottle for over 5 years. Far from the broad-shouldered, rugged style that can typically come from Rioja, this is sultry and elegant with notes of leather, stewed blackberries, cassis, cinnamon, and rosemary. This has concentration without feeling weighted and holds its finish impressively well.
