2021 J. C. Somers Croft Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Willamette Valley, Oregon $47.99
J.C. Somers is the collaboration between Jay Christopher Somers and his longtime partner and wife Ronda Newell-Somers. The label displays the New Moon which signifies a new phase in their winemaking adventures. After founding in 1996 and then devolving the J.Christopher brand they are returning to their roots producing small quantities of focused, elegant and terroir driven wines from the best sites in the Willamette Valley. Many will remember the Croft Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, which put the grape on the Oregon map for nearly 2 decades. This new version is fresher and better than ever! No oak barrels this time around. Just focused, bright, mineral-laden Sauvignon, the way we like it! Electric acidity, mouth-watering citrus overtones, spicy herbaceous notes, but no green bell pepper to be found. Just an awesome wine of old-vine depth.
2021 Haden Fig Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, Oregon $25.99
"Haden Fig is a sister label to Evesham Wood. This stunningly good effort could hold its own with many Oregon Chardonnays costing three times as much. Tangy grapefruit, lemon and lime aromas open into a sappy and delicious wine with exceptional depth of flavor. There's a pretty floral top note and a generous mouthfeel. The wine was fermented in neutral barrels with native yeast, went through full malolactic and excels on all levels."
2019 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir "Sojeau Vineyard", Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon $43.99
Founded by Russ Rainey in 1986, Evesham Wood is based on the idea that small is beautiful. To maintain a high level of quality, we rely on two basic principles: obtaining optimally ripe low-yield fruit from the best possible sites in the Willamette Valley, and using minimal intervention in the winemaking process. That approach is alive and well today, and is evident in every bottle we produce.
With a more restrained nose, the Sojeau bottling needs a bit of time at this stage to show all its complexity. However, the mid-palate is unctuous and packed with red and black berries showing heft and elegance.
2018 J. Christopher Pinot Noir Basalte, Willamette Valley, Oregon $30.99
Winemaker Notes
The Basalte Pinot Noir is our bedrock bottling from the Willamette Valley. It is sourced from vineyards in two AVAs — Chehalem Mountains and Dundee Hills — that have fairly thin volcanic clay topsoil over fractured basalt. This type of very rocky soil lends itself to full-bodied, firmly structured wines. The Basalte captures this expressive character of the soil, with deep red fruit and a fine tannic structure that maintains the elegant style we are seeking.
Critical Acclaim
JS93James Suckling
Aromas of red berries, violets and nutmeg. Medium-bodied with bright, driving acidity. Strawberry and red cherry. The fresh fruit is carried by slightly tight tannins. Very energetic.
2019 J. C. Somers "Nouvelle Lune" Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, Oregon $44.99
A homage to the terroir of the Dundee Hills, Jay Somers blended Pinot noir grapes from three vineyards in the AVA into this Pinot noir, his Nouvelle Lune, or New Moon wine. Comprised of Oregon state’s official soil, red Jory, the Dundee Hills tend to be slightly warmer than other AVAs within the Willamette Valley. Warmer temperatures and that Jory soil are two factors that contribute to red fruit characteristics in its grapes. So you can expect abundant red fruit, as well as plenty of acidity in the Nouvelle Lune, making it a very versatile food wine.
2021 Division Pinot Noir Deux, Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon $47.99
The 2021 Division Pinot Noir "Deux" comes from Eola Springs Vineyard, planted in 1972, farmed biodynamically, and was the first vineyard Kate and Thomas worked with at Division. In the glass, this is pure Oregon Pinot. Juicy red fruits with a slight tang, balanced by lush texture and an earthy, spicy, herbal finish. While absolutely delicious tonight (with about 30 minutes of air) we think this could go for the long haul, if that's your thing..
